DISCUSSIONS AT SCHOOLS
In cooperation with the queer film festival Mezipatra, we provide film presentations with educational talks, targeting students in the 8th and 9th classes of the elementary schools and middle schools students.
During the discussions, qualified lectors will talk sensibly to the students about sexual orientation, accepting oneself, accepting diversity, and preventing STDs like HIV/AIDS. The film presentation can be a complement to the curriculum framework, work as prevention against bullying, or cover topics that students would encounter otherwise. The debates aim mainly to engage the students, encourage them to notice things and ask questions that will be answered by the host, who will provide detail and maybe use his/her own experience.
You can order film screenings and discussions to be held right in your schools. The length of the program is 1,5-2 hours, and the fee is 80 CZK/student. The debates are led by experienced lectors from the Mezipatra film festival, the Prague Pride association and the online peer-to-peer website Sbarvouven.cz.
You can choose from the following programs:
Raising Zoey
Themes: family, transgender, acceptance, bullying
Recommended classes: 8th – First class of middle school
13 year-old Zoey wants nothing more than to simply go to school, learn, have fun with friends and be a kid. Unfortunately, ignorance and intolerance have not always made this easy. Zoey, with the help of her mother and the ACLU, fought school officials for her right to self-identify in school. Even in the face of bullying and endless teasing from both school officials and students, Zoey determinedly continues to live her life and tells her story in the hopes of helping others persevere in living their authentic lives.
(Dante Alencastre: Raising Zoey), USA, 2016, Czech subtitles, 54 min.
Who’s Gonna Love Me Now?
Themes: sexual orientation, HIV/AIDS, religion, family
Recommended classes: 8th – 4th class of middle school
Saar is an HIV-positive gay man. After living as an expat in London for twenty years, he is trying to reconnect with his conservative family in Israel. But the return is not easy. Part of the family blames him for having gone to live in another country, others cannot accept his sexual orientation, or are plainly afraid that Saar will infect their children with HIV. The document addresses the topics of trust, need for acceptance and stereotypes.
(Barak &Tomer Heymann) Israel, Great Britain, 2016, Czech subtitles, 58 min.
Short films bloc: Be Yourself
Themes: gender roles, stereotype, identity, asexuality, intersexuality, drag.
Recommended classes: 8th – 4th class of middle school
This block of three short films introduces several young people who discover their identity in various forms. Some of them recognize that nothing is just black and white, that there is no strictly male, or strictly female. Youtuber Pidgeon talks about their intersexuality, meaning that they were born with both sets of genitals. Dani then describes why she became a DRAG activist - she likes to take on male roles, which make her feel more like herself. The last film about Danny, a young gay asexual, is a story about the search for love, and about the fear that others will not accept us as we are.
Brazil. USA Australia, 37 min.
